The birthday of Lord Rama, seventh avatar of Vishnu, born at noon in Ayodhya to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya. Devotees fast, recite the Ramayana and Rama Raksha Stotra, and perform Rama’s puja at the midday muhurat shown here, often with a tiny cradle for the infant Rama.
Concludes the nine-day Chaitra Navratri. Ayodhya, Bhadrachalam and Rameswaram hold vast celebrations; South Indian temples perform Sita-Rama Kalyanam (celestial wedding). Ratha yatras (chariot processions) with Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman wind through many towns.
