Raksha Bandhan 2027 in Auckland falls on Tuesday, August 17, 2027. Rakhi window is 7:02 AM to 7:29 PM GMT+12.
The "bond of protection": a sister ties a sacred rakhi thread on her brother’s wrist, prays for his long life, and he vows to protect her. Scriptural echoes include Indrani tying a protective thread on Indra, and Draupadi binding Krishna’s wounded finger with her sari — which Krishna repaid manifold.
A pan-Indian celebration of the sibling bond, extending to cousins and chosen family. Homes fill with sweets and gifts; markets glitter with rakhis for weeks. The same full moon is also Narali Purnima for coastal communities and the day of changing the sacred thread (Upakarma/Avani Avittam) for many South Indians.
Tradition prescribes tying the rakhi during aparahna (afternoon) while avoiding Bhadra — the timing shown here follows that rule. Sisters typically also do aarti and apply tilak before sweets are exchanged.
