Important if you are coordinating with family in India:
Guru Purnima falls on July 14, 2030 in Toronto, but on July 15, 2030 in India.
Hindu observances are tied to the tithi at your local sunrise (or to a local moment such as sunset or midnight),
so the calendar date legitimately shifts by a day across time zones. Both are correct for their own location.
What Guru Purnima means
Religious significance
Honors the guru β the dispeller of darkness. It is the birthday of Veda Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas and wrote the Mahabharata (hence Vyasa Purnima). In the yogic tradition, Shiva became the Adi Guru and began transmitting yoga on this day; Buddhists mark it as the day Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
Cultural significance
Students and disciples across India honor teachers, mentors and elders β spiritual and secular. Ashrams and temples hold Vyasa Puja and pada-puja ceremonies; in ISKCON and many sampradayas, Chaturmasya (the four holy months) begins.
Good to know
A day to formally thank your teachers β traditionally with an offering (guru-dakshina), even a simple note of gratitude. Many begin new studies or spiritual practices today.
