Important if you are coordinating with family in India: Govardhan Puja falls on October 19, 2028 in Auckland, but on October 18, 2028 in India. Hindu observances are tied to the tithi at your local sunrise (or to a local moment such as sunset or midnight), so the calendar date legitimately shifts by a day across time zones. Both are correct for their own location.

What Govardhan Puja means

Religious significance

Krishna lifted Govardhan hill on his little finger for seven days, sheltering Braj from Indra’s deluge and teaching that devotion and one’s own dharma outweigh pride. Worship of the hill — and of cows, the givers of nourishment — marks the day.

Cultural significance

Annakut, "the mountain of food": temples and homes build a small Govardhan of cow dung or grain and offer vast spreads of food, grandest at Nathdwara and the ISKCON and Vaishnava temples. In Gujarat this day is Bestu Varas — the new year.

Good to know

Circumambulating Govardhan hill (parikrama) in Braj today draws lakhs. Offer a chappan bhog — or simply cook something with love and offer it before eating.
