Important if you are coordinating with family in India: Diwali falls on October 25, 2030 in Toronto, but on October 26, 2030 in India. Hindu observances are tied to the tithi at your local sunrise (or to a local moment such as sunset or midnight), so the calendar date legitimately shifts by a day across time zones. Both are correct for their own location.

What Diwali means

Religious significance

The festival of lights. On this new-moon night Rama returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and victory over Ravana, welcomed by rows (avali) of lamps (deepa). Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped at pradosh with Ganesha for prosperity; in the East, Kali Puja is held the same night. For Jains it marks Mahavira’s nirvana, and for Sikhs, Bandi Chhor Divas.

Cultural significance

India’s grandest festival: homes are cleaned and decorated with diyas and rangoli, families gather in new clothes, sweets and gifts circulate, and fireworks light the night sky. The five-day arc runs Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.

Good to know

Lakshmi Puja is performed during pradosh while Amavasya prevails — the window shown here. Keep at least one lamp burning through the night. The next day begins the new year in several regional calendars (e.g., Vikram Samvat in Gujarat).
